Coliving, Coworking in Tenerife : Eternal Spring Paradise

Casa Alondra : an alternative to temporary rental in the Canary islands

Do you want to go abroad for work? Or to get away for a few weeks on a holiday? Or perhaps you're looking for a place to take an introspective break during a life transition? Think co-living/co-working in Tenerife! This community-based approach, combining co-living and co-working was developed at the initiative of the connected generation of millenials. Today, digital nomads are no longer the only ones taking advantage of the benefits of the Canary archipelago as a base camp. Let's take a tour of the island and the owner of Casa Alondra.

The co-living solution and its benefits

Each generation leaves its mark on the world. Generation Y (born between 1980 and the mid-90s) has revolutionized the way people relate to work, favoring a balance between professional and personal life. This philosophy includes a new idea of their place of activity, away from the office site. The health crisis has accentuated this change, with an increase in home office and freelance work.

At the same time, two concepts have continued to develop: house-sharing and co-working. The combination of the two gave rise to co-living: "co" for together.

    • tenants enjoy the space of a large home
    • common areas (inside and outside) are shared
    • guests have their own private room.

The living space also becomes the working space, with its own dedicated office.

Initiated by the demand from digital natives who have already embraced the culture of sharing, the co-living solution is appealing to all generations. It meets the motivations of a wide range of profiles, including:

    • self-employed people working remotely
    • travelling souls, freelance or not
    • employees on professional mobility or assignments
    • future tenants or homeowners waiting for the keys to their next home
    • retired people who feel curious about the beauty of the world.

The prefix CO represents the cornerstone of the co-living principle. It's not just a simple furnished seasonal rental with the slogan: "I arrive, do what I want and leave and no matter what happens after I leave!" Not at all. You're adopting a lifestyle that combines sharing and co-working. You become a resident or a co-liver in your own right, and so:

    • you form a caring COmmuninity
    • you comply with the established CO-living rules
    • you have a good spirit with your CO-livers.

Note : the term resident has nothing to do with the American TV series The Resident. Breathe, everything's fine! No one will ask for your first aid skills as a guarantee of admission to the co-living.

Only keep in mind that the sharing values, mutual aid and respect are the foundation of a successful stay.

Coliving-coworking in Tenerife : the island's highlights

Stories from young entrepreneurs and start-ups have undoubtedly come up on your Instagram feed. Your first virtual glimpse of a co-living holiday is limited to sunny posts from Chiang Mai in Thailand, Canggu in Bali or Taghazoute au Morocco. Working sessions are held at the pool bar and the after-work sessions take place in a festive atmosphere close to the blue lagoon beach.

It all sounds nice, but it's not what you're looking for. Which is just as well because Tenerife differs from this image. It has its own charm and plenty of ways to reconcile the beauty of the world with a professional life.

By the way, where is Tenerife situated? Located off the coast of Morocco and the Western Sahara, Tenerife and six other islands make up one of Spain's autonomous communities. It is the largest and most populated of the Canary archipelago and Macaronesia.

You can choose between the dry south area or the rainiest north. That said, the small temperature range means that temperatures rarely fall below 15°C in winter. You can take advantage of the eternal spring when it's 22°C in the middle of February!

Harnessing the magic of nature Tenerife is a volcanic land of enchanting landscapes. It has two UNESCO World Heritage sites:

  1. Teide National Park
  2. The town of San Cristobal de la Laguna.

When it comes to landscape, hiking enthusiasts will find plenty to do. Adventurers can trek around the Teide volcano, the 3rd highest volcano on our planet, or in the middle of the Caldera de las Caňadas. The island has a biosphere reserve in the Anaga massif and a primary forest, the Laurisylve subtropical forest.

When it comes to seacapes, you'll find the Garachico area. As for your relaxation break, there's plenty to choose from. Do you prefer calm and exotic places? Recover from your efforts in one of the natural pools. Unless you fancy a magical show? Then let yourself be captivated by the dance of the whales at Los Gigantes.

Another advantage to bear in mind for digital nomads: Tenerife is part of the Schengen area. European Union nationals do not need a visa. You won't have to leave the country every 90 days.

Shared accommodation 2.0 in the Canary archipelago: the peaceful paradise of Casa Alondra

According to a 2019 study by BNP Paribas Real Estate, 75% of "co-livers" are between 23 and 31 years old. Dubai, Barbados, Estonia, Portugal and Spain are all banking on the economic potential of digital globetrotters. The sine qua non for attracting and satisfying them is a high-speed internet connection! At the very least, the rented flat or shared house must offer excellent quality wifi.

The owners of Casa Alondra have refurbished their home with the well-being of their guests in mind. Each private room has its own ensuite bathroom and is equipped with:

  1. a fast, stable type 6E network
  2. an individual workspace (desk and screen).

The layout is ideal for holding zoom meetings or recording YouTube videos.

The cinematic analogy with Cédric Klapisch's comedy could have worked to describe a co-living/co-working experience in Tenerife! But this shared house is not the “Auberge Espagnole” (Pot luck or Spanish Apartment)! You'’ll enjoy the peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It'’s a place where you can enjoy comfort, privacy, peace and conviviality. You’ll choose your working environment, either in your own private office or in the shared spaces, both of which are conducive to reflection, concentration, and creativity. And if need be, your colleagues can become your coworkers for a few moments of feedback on the terrace around the swimming pool.

With its ensuite rooms or its private flat, Casa Alondra is also ideal for moments of transition, introspection, or convalescence. You'’ll enjoy the benefits of the coziness of a large house and its concierge services.

Other advantages of coliving in Tenerife: water sports activities and the island's cultural life.

Tenerife is a favorite destination for hikers. But if you want to keep your flip-flops on, the island has other attractions.

Tenerife has its own way of life. Although it's an island far from the mainland metropolises, it follows the Spanish way of life: Maňana por la maňana! No unnecessary hustle and bustle, so no stress. Thanks to the low cost of living, you can make the most of your free time.

Do you love old buildings? Tenerife also has a rich architectural heritage :

    • the Basilica de la Candelaria, a place of pilgrimage
    • the pyramids of Güímar, inspired by the Aztecs and Mayans
    • the village of La Orotava.

The island lives to the rhythm of Catholic festivals. But the highlight is the Carnival in February. The second most popular parade after Rio de Janeiro, it is in contention for a place on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Did you know that the painter and sculptor César Manrique was born in the Canary Islands? He was also an advocate of sustainable development. The maritime parks of Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz were created on his initiative.

The topography and the trade winds make the south-east coast an excellent spot for water sports. In particular, El Médano maintains its reputation as a seaside resort for kitesurfing, windsurfing and wing-foil. Just a 7-minute drive from Casa Alondra, you’ll carpool there with your friends in a blitz!

A word about the owners of Casa Alondra

Casa Alondra is much more than a simple rental of rooms or a private flat in a large, comfortable villa in Tenerife. It's a project run by Anna Maria and her husband Hervé for the well-being of travelers.

Who are Anna Maria and Hervé? A guy (from the West) and a girl (from the East) travelling the world as expatriates. South Korea, Denmark, Spain - it's fair to say that this couple from Nantes and Montbéliard have mastered the theme of travel and the constraints that go with it!

They moved to the Canaries following a professional mutation. Sandrine took Anna Maria as her stage name, easier to pronounce in Spanish.

From their stays on the other side of the world, they particularly enjoyed the cultural exchanges and culinary discoveries. Before leaving for a second expatriation to the Land of the Morning Calm, they converted their Tenerife sweet home into a co-living / co-working space.

Casa Alondra's philosophy is based on their values of sharing and their ecological convictions. The interior and exterior layout encourages interaction between guests of different nationalities..

The concept of reduced cost

Co-livers enjoy a 'product and service' of greater comfort: swimming pool, barbecue and concierge service. Anna Maria is proud of her garden, with real grass, a majestic palm tree, birds of paradise, cacti and succulents. Hervé, an IT specialist by trade, has made a point of installing the latest high-performance wifi technology in every room.

Easy access to accommodation

Accommodation in Tenerife is a major problem, as everything is geared towards nightly rentals. Prices are insane and the guarantees are quite strict. Casa Alondra is a good alternative.

The principle of sustainability

Sharing a residence and home equipment reduces the your carbon impact. Of course, the majority of holidaymakers reach the island by plane. However, there are ferry services from Spain.

9 guests can live in this home, which is usually occupied by a couple, and Anna Maria has planned everything for recycling.

Networking

The space is designed to encourage interaction between the different members of the family, while maintaining a sense of privacy. This "together separately" encourages :

    • developing complementary skills through co-working
    • breaking away from the traditional individualistic way of life.

Life at Casa Alondra is also LGBTQ+ friendly.
